Inside the story.
Sarah Wynn was eight years old when a car accident deep in Appalachia killed her parents. She remembers the storm, the twisted metal, her mother's voice, and something in the woods that she has never been able to explain.
Years later, Sarah works as a park ranger in those same mountains. She knows the trails and the weather, how people get lost, and how quickly a small mistake in the wilderness can become a dangerous one. The mountains that once terrified her have become the place she understands best.
When people begin disappearing, Sarah joins the searches. Missing hikers aren't unusual, but abandoned campsites and tracks she can't identify are harder to explain. As the search moves farther from the marked trails, Sarah has little to rely on except her experience and what she can see in front of her.
The deeper the search takes her into the mountains, the harder the trail is to find.
